making time

Something I hear all the time... "There's just not enough time". Is that really the case? Or is that just an excuse to neglect something someone promised? I'm not really sure. I've seen it both ways. Sometimes it really does feel like there isn't enough time in the day to do all of the things I want to do. But then I watch myself sit down on the couch and spend 30 minutes watching someone else do something I wanted to do... The irony.

So make time for it. Make time for the things you really want to do. I don't just mean saying you're going to do something. I mean taking the time to sit down in front of the hours ahead of you and deciding exactly what you're going to use those hours for. Time block. Create a second brain. Something that you can use to offload all of your ideas so you can see them in a form other than a transcendental thought. Thoughts are fleeting. We have thousands every day. If not more. There is nothing worse than having a brilliant thought just to lose it the next moment and never be able to recall it. So when you have that perfect idea, get it into the world. Make it real in the smallest form possible. A reminder, a note, a little piece of wood with something scratched on it (looking at you, Rudy). Make it real.

Once it's real, then it's just like all of the other objects we come in contact with every day. It can just sit there and take up space. Or you can move it around. After all, objects in motion, stay in motion. Even if there are just ideas made real. Then you can start to have fun with it. This is the point I like to let things stew for a little. Are they really good ideas? Or just fluff? I put them in storage for a bit. Once or twice a month, I'll go through that storage bin and pull out the ones that are keepers. I put these in the forefront of my attention. My "focus" list in my reminders app. At this point it's just a matter of making time to do them. Open that calendar of yours and notice how empty it may look, or full if this is something you already do... If it is empty, then you have all the time in the world to do the things you want to do. If it's full, well, look for the gaps, fill them.

Be sure you make time for yourself too. If you aren't resting and recovering from the things you do, you're going to burn out. And let me tell you, burn out SUCKS. So rest. Recuperate. Then get back to it. There is nothing wrong with planning time for doing anything you want. In fact, it's a great thing to do. With that being said, I've got other things I need to attend to.

To my fellow Americans, Happy Fourth!
